Scratch is a high-level, block-based visual programming language that comes with a community platform. It serves as an educational tool originally created by the MIT media lab to encourage coding, interactive stories, games, art, and computer science. The digital space allows children to engage positively with technology and pose as creators and problem solvers.Β
The sky is the limit when it comes to empowering students. Since 2019, we've engaged with the Scratch community to educate and entertain children with content about birds, art, and creativity. As of May 2025, we've decided to blend this creator culture with our organizational goalsβresulting in a new initiative, Bird2Scratch.
β Helping students navigate careers and opportunities in a new way.
β Hosting fun and interactive events and projects for children ages 8-16.
β Building a growing community and simulating currency exchanges to stimulate creativity and art creation.
β Centered around bird conservation and innovative solutions.
β Interweaved seamlessly into student-friendly Scratch 3.0 platform.
Across almost 5 years, we single-handedly put together 3,129 art pieces and animation frames with several objectives.
Awareness. Comics, short-form content, and story narratives about birds and wildlife teaching themes about conservation, independence, and critical thinking.
Philanthropy. Creating free artwork for children in the digital space to appreciate, inspiring them to make creative works based on their passions in turn. This also involved trading artwork with others in the online space to facilitate creative growth.
Education. Designing characters and games centered around scientific and environmental themes to empower children.
Entertainment. Showcasing dynamic narratives and animations about self-designed characters to reflect on themes in life and learning.
Commission. A very small portion of creations (<1%) are commissioned, meaning that a fee must be paid to use. With the platform DeviantART to facilitate the transactions, $400+ was raised since 2023 and will be going towards funding further educational developments.
We encouraged students to collectively create 2,147 art pieces, interactive projects, videos, and animation frames, all part of a community of intellectual growth.
Collaboration: Works featuring characters designed by Bird2Scratch, unique interpretations of educational and inspirational narratives.
Exchange: Creating artwork and animation in exchange for other original work, through an "art market" style interaction that encouraged mutual improvement.
Competition: Creating art, design, and code as part of hosted Bird2Scratch competitions that encourage depictions of educational themes.
Donation: Creating art to "donate" to the creative space that Bird2Scratch hosts.
The core of Bird2Scratch is its community. Members can trade a made-up currency to get art, designs, and projects from each other, while participating in events created by Bird2Scratch, like contests and educational experiences to earn.
8,000+ content followersβnote that Scratch is a smaller platform and llacks a follower recommendation algorithm. Nearly all followers were gained by direct community engagement and outreach, the count proportional to 6.3M followers on YouTube.
75,900+ interactive project, app, & game visitors across all time.
955+ community studio followers.
259+ members eligible to trade with currency and engage in interactive activities.
72+ art stalls and marketplaces created by members.
With roughly ~60 members that actively participated in this role-play activity, "Birds" (2021-23) was a role-play based around a webtoon created to reflect societal hierarchies, power dynamics, and the diversity and importance of bird species in a cartoony way.
Several iterations of the project were once released, accumulating to 300+ panels and scenes. Members followed realistic principles to act as bird species in a kingdom, cleverly dodging calls for corruption and power consolidation.
This two-part initiative was an Invention Convention 2022 national finalist & state Industry Innovator Award-recognized prototype for animal care.
Using biochemistry and sustainability principles to guide the user through setting up a healthy fish tank, this app's aim is to prevent improper treatment of animals and plants using a simple interface.
This project received both the Front Page Curator and Featured awards, receiving site-wide recognition among <1% of outstanding projects.
2. "Pigeon Path" (2100+ players)
After researching a city ecosystem and traits of urban birds using principles of ornithology and ecology, a game was designed to simulate the tough life of a city pigeon for young students, showcasing the impact of food pollution, predators, and the process of bird survival.
The game was piloted in a gifted intervention class of 5th graders and received highly positive reception.
Featuring roughly 100 characters and 1700+ images, part of stories based on chemical principles and societal structures.
